Cold Dew arrives. The chill in the air deepens, and dew begins its journey toward frost. The ancients divided Cold Dew into three seasonal signs: wild geese migrate south, small birds become less active as clams grow more abundant along the shore, and chrysanthemums come into full bloom.

Through the changing forms of all living things, nature records the turning of the seasons. It reflects an ancient Chinese wisdom:

observing nature and capturing its essence through forms. Interestingly, this same wisdom can also be found within Chinese characters.

Bird-and-Insect Seal Script captures the graceful forms of birds in flight, and the winding curves of insects and serpents, weaving them into the strokes of seal script. Some strokes resemble a bird spreading its wings; others curl like the body of an insect or snake. Every character has its own form, and every character holds a picture within.

As part of China's national intangible cultural heritage, Bird-and-Insect Seal Script takes Chinese characters back to their origins, when writing and the natural world were deeply intertwined.

Cold Dew teaches water to draw inward, while Bird-and-Insect Seal Script allows every stroke to unfold. One constricts, the other expands. Both are ways in which all things return to their own true forms.

As the days grow colder, may you be like the chrysanthemum, knowing when to bloom; like these ancient characters, standing with strength and grace and in this season of gathering inward, calmly grow into a shape that is entirely your own.
