During the Major Snow solar term, the north wind sweeps across the land, and all things enter the quietest phase of the year. Yet the brass pot on the sugar-painting stall sends up clouds of steam, forming a sharp contrast with the biting cold in the air.

The old craftsman says that this is exactly the season for making sugar paintings. The colder it gets, the faster the syrup sets, and the stronger the lines of the picture become.

The master's brass pot simmers slowly over the stove, as the maltose thickens from thin to viscous, raising fine golden bubbles. The temperature of the syrup must be precise: if it's too hot, it turns burnt and bitter; if it's not hot enough, it stays sticky and soft. Just like the Major Snow solar term, only when the cold reaches its extreme does new life appear, and only when the sugar reaches the perfect heat does it truly become a work of art.

The fragility, brittleness, and fleeting sweetness of sugar painting perfectly mirror the qualities of the Major Snow season: all the carefully crafted crystal clarity will eventually melt into sweetness; and all the time spent in silent waiting is quietly nurturing new life.
