As Chushu arrives, "Chu" means to cease. The heat reaches its end, and the first signs of autumn begin to emerge. At this time, the days remain warm while the nights turn cool, and nature begins to take on a solemn stillness. It is precisely the season when "the grain ripens and is brought in."
For an agrarian people, the hopes for "abundance" and "peace" have never been confined to the fields. This reverence for the turning of the seasons, and the hope for peace and well-being at home, were carved stroke by stroke by craftsmen of the Central Plains into Woodblock New Year Pictures.
As the grains ripen at Chushu, people pray for abundance. When the first breath of autumn coolness sweeps across Songshan Mountain, those Woodblock New Year Pictures, carrying a faint scent of ink and the warmth of wood, carry forward, through the most unadorned strokes of knife and brush, the Chinese people's timeless wish for peace, health, and prosperity year after year.
May the auspicious blessings held within this small space accompany you through the golden autumn, bringing smooth days ahead and abundance year after year.
